Central Wastewater Treatment Plant Optimization

Overview

Nashville's Central Water Reclamation Facility—the largest of three water reclamation facilities operated by Metro Water Services—underwent a transformative expansion to increase its daily processing capacity by 100 million gallons. This critical infrastructure upgrade addressed multiple objectives to:

  • Modernize aging infrastructure systems

  • Accommodate increased wastewater flows from downtown Nashville's growing urban core

  • Improve and protect entirety of Nashville’s watershed

  • Reuse existing structures

  • Meet EPA consent decree requirements for combined sewer overflow reduction

This project aligns Nashville with nationwide urban infrastructure renewal efforts while providing tailored solutions to address the city's specific environmental challenges and growth patterns.

Wilmot’s Role

Wilmot delivered comprehensive sustainability planning and engineering support that significantly reduces costs while extending benefits beyond traditional wastewater treatment improvements. Our cost-effective approach created:

  • Energy-efficient systems that substantially lower operational expenses and reduce utility bills

  • Over 10 acres of native prairie converted from asphalt that eliminates ongoing maintenance costs

  • A new community park using budget-conscious design that enhances recreational opportunities and neighborhood connectivity

  • Low-maintenance native landscaping that generates immediate and long-term savings for Metro Water Services through reduced water usage, decreased maintenance hours, and eliminated chemical treatments

  • Solutions that maximize return on investment

Through strategic integration of infrastructure improvements with budget-conscious design, this project demonstrates how essential utility upgrades can simultaneously achieve environmental compliance, operational efficiency, and significant cost savings for Metro Water Services and Nashville residents.

Results

  • 10+ acres of asphalt returned to natural ecological function

  • New community park for Germantown/Salemtown neighborhoods

  • Reduced energy usage from more efficient equipment
