Nashville International Airport Triple Bottom Line

Overview

As the greater Nashville region experiences rapid growth, the Nashville International Airport (BNA) is undertaking a $1.2 billion expansion to accommodate an anticipated 23 million annual passengers by 2037. This ambitious investment includes major upgrades to terminal capacity, infrastructure, and services—positioning BNA as a key transportation hub for the southeastern United States and a gateway to the city’s economic future.

Wilmot’s Role

Wilmot partnered with BNA to help ensure that this expansion aligned with long-term sustainability goals. Our team conducted a comprehensive waste characterization study to identify opportunities for reducing landfill contributions and diverting high-priority materials. In parallel, we evaluated 3 alternative runway and terminal layouts using a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework—analyzing each option based on its environmental impact, economic return, social value, resource use, and resilience. This approach allowed BNA to make a fully informed decision and choose the design alternative with the highest ROI and least environmental impact. The TBL gives decision makers the ability to make smarter investments with data-backed success metrics needed for fiscally responsible projects, making sustainability pay.
