Sewanee: The University of the South has a sustainability goal of offsetting 100% of their energy use. Wilmot designed a program to do just that.
Sewanee has a strong sustainability mission and is committed to promoting and embodying sustainable infrastructure throughout the university. Seeking a meaningful expansion of their on-campus renewable energy generation, Sewanee asked Wilmot to assess the feasibility and outline a comprehensive plan to help offset their energy 100% with renewable energy..
In partnership with Sewanee’s staff, Wilmot developed a plan to offset 100% of electricity usage with solar including:
identifying installation sites,
performing an analysis of potential energy generation,
calculating costs and savings that incorporates future energy efficiency projects, and
writing the RFP and overseeing the bid process.
The resulting plan includes 10 MW of solar installations both on and off campus. It also includes an innovative partnership with the local power company.
Additionally, Wilmot developed and helped teach an innovative solar planning and development course for the Carey Fellows at the Babson Center, senior business students. The successful capstone project mirrored Wilmot’s work with the University. After taking the class, the honors students will be able to estimate and develop a solar array and calculate cost savings from installing on rooftops at the companies they will be working for in the future.
