Siemens – Greening Public Housing
On February 17, 2009, President Barack Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Provisions included funding to help create healthy living environments and promote sustainability in public housing projects.
Through ARRA grants, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development sponsored and showcased pilot projects that lowered utility costs and conserved energy, water, materials, and other resources. To achieve this mission, Siemens, a global leader in energy and water efficiency, selected Wilmot as part of its team to perform design and operational assessments at its public housing customer sites nationwide.
Wilmot designed an assessment protocol, conducted assessments, developed recommendations, priced solutions and benefits, and trained housing authority staff, contractors, and residents at over 40% of the pilot locations in the country. Facilities ranged from one-story townhouses and flats to 14-story towers. Wilmot’s work will be expanded to target a larger housing authority audience and continued implementation. As part of the effort, Wilmot also assisted Green Seal, the oldest third-party certification body in the U.S., in developing a Green Operations & Maintenance Manual that will be released as a public resource.
