Nashville Goes Net-Zero Energy

Background

Following Wilmot's successful installation of 4 MW of solar for the water department, the City of Nashville (Metro) chose Wilmot to help guide efforts on the City's 2041 mandate to use 100% renewable sources for electricity. The initial project entailed performing cost-benefit analysis on 230 properties owned by Metro, including schools, fire stations, police stations, libraries, and community centers. The City plans to install 100 MW of solar on Metro owned buildings to cover the city’s electrical use, saving Nashville nearly $80M over the life of the project.

Results

The Wilmot team provided Metro Nashville with an in-depth evaluation of all properties capable of hosting solar arrays. Wilmot then issued a request for proposals, enabling Metro to evaluate bids from third-party vendors and secure the best pricing available. After the winning bids are selected, Wilmot will oversee the design and construction phases of the project. In addition to providing clean, renewable energy, solar is an increasingly attractive option for local governments looking to take control of their energy bills and build more resilient communities. The third-party model covers all financing, installation, and operating costs. This translates to zero upfront cost for Metro Nashville. Through contracts with these third parties, Metro will lock in their energy costs for the next two decades, mitigating the effects of future energy price increases.
